Installation sonore de Thomas Bégin

Full Spectrum est une installation et une performance sonore, composée d'un dispositif électromagnétique et de quatre amplificateurs de guitare. Une fois en marche, ondes sonores et pulsations lumineuses deviennent parfaitement synchrones, voire hypnotiques.

FULL SPECTRUM
Sound installation by Thomas Bégin

Full Spectrum is a sound installation and performance piece composed of an electromagnetic device and four guitar amplifiers. Upon activation, sound waves and pulses of light become perfectly synchronized, even hypnotic.

ISEA 2010 RUHR, 16e édition de l'International Symposium on Electronic Art, commence demain et le programme s'annonce chargé...

Outre son fameux programme de conférences, on y retrouve plusieurs expositions dont TRUST avec, entre autres, des projets de Carsten Nicolai (de), Sophie Bélair Clément (qc/ca), Antoine Schmitt (fr). Aussi, la ISEA2010 RUHR Exhibition avec plus d'une trentaine d'artistes dont Charles Stankievech(qc/ca) ainsi qu'Arctic Perspective avec la participation de Matthew Biederman (ca).

Plusieurs 'keynotes' dont ceux de Brian Massumi (qc/at) et Roy Ascott (gb) + workshops + performances dont Just Noticeable Difference de Christopher Salter (qc/ca) + concerts, etc.

Andreas Broeckmann assume la direction artistique de l'événement.

Du 16 au 20 août prochain se tiendra la 15e édition d'Interactive Screen 1.0: Beautiful Lives du Banff New Media Institute, au Banff Centre.

Programmé depuis 2006 par Daniel Canty (et Susan Kennard jusqu'à l'année dernière), l'événement/symposium rassemble chaque année une cinquantaine d'artistes et d'intervenants culturels qui oeuvrent à différents niveaux dans le champ élargi des nouveaux médias.

> Now in its 15th installment at The Banff Centre, Interactive Screen is the Banff New Media Institute’s flagship new media event. Its category-busting gambit is to mix a world’s worth of media makers, thinkers, and movers around an open theme, and see what happens. This year’s Interactive Screen 1.0: Beautiful Lives looks at the way new media intersects with our aspirations and ambitions, individual or collective, convergent or contradictory, for the betterment of life. This follows directly on the theme of Interactive Screen 0.9: The Makers, which explored the idea of a “society of makers,” redefining the structures of cultural ownership through ground-up creative action.

> Interactive Screen is about the relationships of the things and people that make new media exist. Participants delve into the creative, social, and economic impacts of media, technologies, and networks, but they also look at how makers interface with each other, as well as with various markets, audiences, and communities. Questioning the implicit values of new media and the constructs that surround its production, interpretation, and consumption, unearthing unsuspected potentialities, and sparking unexpected action are at the heart of the event.

Le thème Beautiful Lives est né des préoccupations d'Adam Zaretsky - participant de la précédente édition - à la fois bio-artiste, performeur, chercheur et théoricien.

> Although the desires of mutants are not necessarily convergent with the motives of mutagen providers, their interests certainly intersect. The point where this happens, avowedly hard to locate, is one of many where the social contract is being rewritten. Zaretsky’s demonstration subtly raised the suspicion that most of us, although our agendas vastly differ, live our lives aesthetically. That is, we make out lives according to stated or unstated principles which lead us to value certain behaviours, and certain people, above others. The old drama of us and them, with its mechanics of good and bad, its moral confusions and revelatory actions, makes a tragic comeback. Aesthetics, in this purview, is not so much about the morally-loaded ideal of beauty, but about shaping states of being. These intuitions are at the heart of Beautiful Lives.

Interactive Screen comporte également un volet Scholarship Intensive - intensif est le bon terme - où une dizaine d'artistes sont invités à formuler et développer un projet inspiré du thème de l'événement, bénéficiant ainsi de l'input de quelques 'peer advisors' et de la qualité/générosité/pertinence des échanges avec les autres participants.

Eastern Bloc acts as a support network to Montreal’s emerging artist community by enabling creative exchanges amongst emerging and established artists so that young artists may gain access to a larger body of spectators and to a network of established art organizations and professionals in the milieu, thus furthering their artistic opportunities.

Artiste sonore et performeuse incontournable, Kaffe Matthews propose une musique pour les corps.

Avec Sonic Bed, l’artiste invite les visiteurs à s’allonger sur un grand lit de bois et à se laisser bercer au gré des vibrations et des pulsations sonores. Muni de panneaux latéraux en écorce et de six caissons d’extrêmes graves enfouis sous un matelas recouvert d’une catalogne, cette récente version québécoise du lit sonore permet non seulement d’écouter, mais de sentir la musique à multivoie.

Conçu à Londres en 2006, le Sonic Bed a voyagé dans plusieurs villes du monde dont Shangaï, Taipei, Mexico, Marfa et Québec, avec des trames sonores exclusives pour chaque présentation. À leur tour, les artistes Georges Azzaria, Magali Babin et John Oswald ont sonorisé ce singulier mobilier vibratoire.

Présenté lors du Mois Multi en 2007 et en 2008, le Sonic Bed_Québec est initialement une coproduction d’Avatar et de Recto- Verso. La version 2 de Sonic Bed_Québec est une coproduction des Productions Recto-Verso et d’OBORO présenté en collaboration avec le festival Elektra.

Renowned new electroacoustic artist Kaffe Matthews brings us music for bodies.

With Sonic Bed_Quebec, Matthews invites visitors to experience music on a sensory level by lying on a catalogne-covered mattress in a large wooden bed and letting themselves be lulled by the vibrations and pulsations of sound. With its bark-covered side panels, six concealed subwoofers and eight surroundsound speakers, this recent Quebecois version of the Sonic Bed provides an opportunity to explore multi-channel music created not only for the ears, but also the body.

Sonic Bed started in London in 2006, spawning local versions of beds in different cities such as Shanghai, Taipei, Mexico and Marfa. This version of the resonant bed is infused with commissioned soundtracks by Canadian sound artists Magali Babin, John Oswald and Georges Azzaria.

Presented at Mois Multi in 2007 and 2008, the original version of the Sonic Bed_Quebec was coproduced by Avatar and Recto-Verso. Sonic Bed_Quebec (version 2) is a coproduction by Recto-Verso and OBORO presented in collaboration with Elektra Festival.

Dans le cadre de la série de conversations proposée à la Librairie du CCA, l’artiste, chercheur et professeur à l’Université Concordia Chris Salter parle des concepts de performance et d’architecture tels qu’exposés dans son nouveau livre Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance, publié chez the MIT Press.

Cet ouvrage très fouillé explore l’influence de la technologie sur les pratiques de performance artistique aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Dans Entangled, Salter montre que les technologies, de mécaniques à informatiques – du « ballet d’objets et de lumières » monté par les Ballets Russes de Diaghilev en 1917 aux « environnements réactifs » rendus possibles par les nouvelles technologies de communication contemporaines, et dans lesquels l’espace devient conscient et doué de sensations –, sont inséparables de la notion de performance dans un grand nombre de disciplines.

Chris Salter est artiste, chercheur, écrivain et commissaire d’exposition. Il est professeur adjoint au Département de design et d’arts numériques de l’Université Concordia et gestionnaire de programme 2009/2010 pour l’Institut de recherche en histoire de l’architecture (IRHA). Ses installations multimédias à grand déploiement ont été présentées internationalement.

As part of an ongoing series of conversations in the CCA Bookstore, artist, researcher and Concordia University professor Chris Salter discusses concepts of performance and architecture from his new book Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance, published by the MIT Press.

The comprehensive book explores technology’s influence on artistic performance practices in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In Entangled, Salter shows that technologies, from the mechanical to the computational – from a “ballet of objects and lights” staged by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1917 to contemporary technologically enabled “responsive environments” in which space becomes aware and sentient due to new communications technologies – have been entangled with performance across a wide range of disciplines.

Chris Salter is an artist, researcher, writer and curator. He is assistant professor in the Department of Design and Computation Arts at Concordia University and 2009-2010 program manager for the Institut de recherche en histoire de l’architecture (IRHA). His large-scale multimedia installations have been shown world-wide.

Computation Arts 2010, témoigne de la nature évolutive du design, en tant que champ de recherche et de pratique interdisciplinaire, par une série de programmes et d’événements axés sur la collectivité. Cette exposition de fin d’année est entièrement produite et organisée par les étudiants au baccalauréat en beaux-arts du programme de design, et se veut une occasion de rencontre entre nos talents émergents et de nouveaux publics. Les œuvres choisies reflètent le développement intensif et les pratiques novatrices qui intègrent graphisme, design industriel, interactif et théorique dans une exploration des problématiques contemporaines rattachées au domaine. Les thèmes de la durabilité, de la responsabilité sociale et de la production éthique reviennent fréquemment dans l’exposition, et soulignent la position particulière et sans équivalent qu’occupe l’Université Concordia comme chef de file en design conceptuel et environnemental.

Parmi les activités programmées, on notera une série de conférences, un mini-colloque et un pecha-kucha des étudiants diplômés.

Arrivals and Departures, the 2010 Design & Computation Arts Student Exhibition reflects the evolving nature of design as a cross-disciplinary field of research and practice through a series of community-oriented programs and events. Produced and curated by students, selected works demonstrate intensive development and innovative practices that incorporate industrial, graphic, interactive, and theoretical design, while exploring contemporary issues in the field. Themes of sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical production are common currents in the show, highlighting Concordia University's unique and unparalleled position as a leader in conceptual and environmental design.

Scheduled activities include an invited speakers series, a mini-colloquium and a graduating student Pecha Kucha.
